Well, that’s what we thought until a thread popped up in our forums discussing a new flat wiper called the Ultimate Wiper Blade manufactured by Valeo. The blade is currently available as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) item on the 2005 XC70, and this product is now available for aftermarket and is easily retrofitted to any previous XC model, or almost any other vehicle.

After a quick bit of research I found that a company called Go Brands is responsible for the marketing the Ultimate Wiper Blades in North America , so I dropped them a line to see about receiving a couple pair for testing purposes. Forbes Oldorf followed up my email with a phone call shortly thereafter and after a discussion about our community and the attention the product was getting, he had two sets off in the mail to me later that day.

Valeo builds everything from electrical and electronic systems to climate control systems, transmissions and most relevant to this article, windshield wipers systems.

We’ve put together two separate reviews. The warm weather Rain Test took place in the coastal, moderate climate of Vancouver, BC and the cold weather Snow Test takes place in Red Deer, Alberta… An area very well known for it’s cold, punishing winters.

It is recommendable that windshield wiper blades be checked at six month intervals rather than wait for them to totally break down. When the wipers begin showing signs of wearing out, they should be replaced. Wiper replacement only takes a short while, but before commencing on this process, they should first be inspected. Wipers should never bear cracks or be torn, ragged or have jagged edges. After tearing or cracking, they become weak and hence cannot dispose of water from the windshield effectively.

Windshield wiper blades are practically built in the same manner with a metallic wiper arm being connected to an electric motor. The metallic wiper arm is extended on the windshield while holding tightly onto the windshield wiper blade alongside the windshield. A windshield wiper blade can be described as a plastic and metallic device holding the rubber insert.

Changing windshield wipers in spare-part stores is usually advisable because the old wipers will be used for comparison purposes before purchasing new ones. There is an option of buying entire wiper blades or simply a refill. Removing old windshield wipers entails lifting the wiper’s arm off from the windshield to easily access and work on. The manner in which the wiper arm is attached to the wiper blades may be determined by pressing or sliding the release tab connecting the two before pulling firmly to ensure they are separated. The wiper is easily removed while at right angles to the windshield wiper arm. There are three different mechanisms commonly found on cars today.

To remove old wipers, the arm of the wiper should be lifted off from the windshield to make working on it easier before determining the means through which the wiper blades and arms are attached. There exist several dissimilar methods currently in use, but with a similar general formula. Slide or press the releasing tab for connecting the wiper’s arm to that of the blade before pulling firmly and separating the wiper’s blade and arm. Removing the wiper is easier while it is in a perpendicular position to the wiper’s arm. The universal slide is the main design of wiper blades commonly used.

It is removed by pressing the lever located on the connection’s bottom before sliding the wiper downwards towards the wiper’s arm base. A side pin is usually 7mm at right angles to the wiper’s arm. It is removed by pressing the spring’s lock button using a tiny Flathead screwdriver, before disentangling the wiper’s blade and the wiper arm.

Installing new wipers necessitates following the directions, which are usually inclusive of new windshield wiper blades. The process is usually simple while the directions typically come in form of picture guides that demonstrate the means of installing the windshield wiper blade. Most blades comprise of adapters that are capable of fitting all sorts of connectors. We recommend that you replace them at least once a year with official Fiat wiper blades – you can buy these from any dealer. They’re always willing to do the job quickly and safely for you if you don’t fancy doing it yourself. Your vehicle handbook will give you specific details about your model’s requirements.

Step one 

Raise the windscreen wiper arm off the windscreen. Position the wiper blade so that it forms a 90° angle with the arm. (You may want to take a digital photo of the blade set-up before you remove it – just in case you get stuck later.)

Step two

Press the tab of the coupling spring and remove the blade from the arm.

Step three

Get the new blade and make sure you have it the right way up. Fit the new blade by inserting the tab into the special slot in the arm. Make sure it’s properly locked into place (you should hear a click), and check that it’s sitting flush to the windscreen.

Step four 

Lower the wiper arm so that the blade sits neatly at the base of the screen. You can test that it wipes properly by turning it on, but don’t test it on a dry windscreen as that will damage your nice new blades.

    If your wiper blades appear soft and pliable yet still skip and chatter we recommend trying a wiper lubricant like 303 Wiper Treatment. This is an excellent penetrating lubricant that coats the natural rubber used in wiper blades and makes them glide like new. If you live in a southern climate, I recommend applying 303 Wiper Treatment once a month to retard wiper blade aging.

    If your wiper blades appear to be pliable and you’ve tried 303 Wiper Treatment yet the blades still chatter and skip, the only remaining cause can be a film or contamination on the glass. I’ve had this happen to me. I replaced the wiper blades on my car, treated them with 303 Wiper Treatment yet they continued to skip and chatter during every rainfall.

     I called my local dealer and the service department told me to clay the glass using any paintwork clay bar and clay lubricant. I clay my car’s paint once a year but I have never clayed the windshield. I tried it and it worked like a charm. The chattering, skipping and smearing stopped and my wiper blades began functioning normally

We also found that all of the windshield wipers provided very good or excellent performance when new, but most quickly degrade after six to nine months of regular use. The Ostar soft wiper was the only wiper blades that began with very good performance and maintained that level through six months. All others dropped in performance after six months.

Depending on the model, that deterioration showed up on the windshield as streaking (leaving lines of water behind), smearing of the water (instead of clearing it), or missed areas of wiping.

We tested the windshield wipers on 185 staffers’ cars. About half came to us with wipers that needed replacing, showing that drivers often don’t notice the slow degradation and leave wipers on longer than they should.

The tested windshield wipers included six beam-blade models, a relatively new design. Unlike conventional wipers, beam blades have no external frames. As a result, they are promoted as providing more uniform pressure on today’s curved windshields and therefore better wiping performance. Beam blades usually cost more than conventional wipers, but overall we didn’t see a notable advantage in regular use.

We also evaluated the wipers on ease of installation and removal. All of the cars in our test had a common hook-type mount, in which the old wiper is simply pulled off of the metal wiper arm and the new one is snapped into place. In our test, the Trico Exact Fit and Trico Teflon Blade proved somewhat difficult to remove, sometimes requiring tools.

Bottom line

All recommended models deliver good performance. But we advise you replace your wipers every six to twelve months. Check the owner’s manual for the correct size and installation method.

What is a winter blade?

What is a winter wiper blades and why would I want one?

When you look at a standard wiper blade frame you can usually see spaces in the frame, especially between the outer frame and the actual wiper blade.

A winter wiper blade is specifically designed for winter driving conditions. The wiper frame is enclosed in a rubber cover, this prevents ice and snow from building up inside the blade housing.

You can see in the picture how the ice builds up around the frame on a standard wiper.

When this snow builds up it can easily get under your blade and cause streaking or prevent the wiper blade from working at all.

A winter wiper blade cannot prevent ice buildup, but it does make it less likely to happen. When it does happen on a winter wiper blade, it is much easier to clear it out since it is all on a flat rubber surface.
