How to Clean Windshield Wiper Blades

Your ability to drive safely in rain, snow and many other inclement conditions depends on having clean windshield wiper blades. If dirt and other buildup accumulate on your wiper blades, it'll end up smeared across your windshield and obscure your view. Spraying windshield wiper fluid across the windshield does a little bit to clean your wiper blades, but if you notice they're not wiping the windshield entirely clean, you should clean them by hand.

Difficulty: Easy Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lift the first windshield wiper gently away from the glass to clean it. It should swing easily out on the pivot arm that connects it to the car at the top of the hood.

  2. Step 2

Wipe the rubber blade of the windshield wiper gently with a water-dampened cloth. If there's stubborn soil on the wiper blade that won't come off, dampen another cloth in windshield wiper fluid and wipe the rubber again.

  3. Step 3

Go back over the rubber blade to wipe off any traces of the windshield wiper fluid, then return the wiper to its original position against the windshield.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the procedure with the other windshield wipers on the vehicle. Don't forget to check for rear windshield wipers. On some very high-end vehicles, there might be tiny wipers over the headlights and/or taillights that can also be wiped clean.
